Starting Jan. 1, Medicare will begin requiring pre-authorizations in the form of Clinical Decision Support (CDS) consultations when ordering outpatient advanced imaging studies such as CT, MRI, PET and nuclear medicine. “ISMA Reports” covered these new requirements in depth earlier this year. 

This video also sheds light on the new requirements for ordering providers. Your EHR vendor should be ready to support this requirement. If your software does not support these requirements, you will need to work with an independent CDS mechanism (CDSM).  For more information and a list of Qualified CDSMs, visit the CMS.gov website.
