Lee McKinley, MD

Lee McKinley, MD, graduated from Indiana University Medical School 50 years ago and received a letter from ISMA the same week asking him to join. With over 45 years of experience as an internal medicine specialist affiliated with Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes and as a faculty member at the Indiana University School of Medicine, he still remembers his beginnings.

“I joined and began feeling like I was part of something bigger than my own dream of being a physician,” Dr. McKinley said. “ISMA kept in touch with me as I completed training, moved away, moved back and set up my practice. It has been my source of CME for licensure, legal advice during difficult times, and keeping me updated on Indiana laws and politics.”

Inspired by a recent discussion during a district meeting, Dr. McKinley decided to donate ISMA memberships to the new IU Bloomington emergency and internal medicine residents (14 of them). These programs just started in July of 2026. He noted that Indiana is losing many of its best physicians and that the corporatization of medical practice is a key reason for his contribution. He also acknowledged the impact of the Physician Assistance Program. 

“County medical societies and ISMA used to be the local solution for any physician who was having substance use issues, mental performance issues or patient complaints,” McKinley said. “These are now aired in a corporate setting and not by your peers.” 

Aloysius (Butch) Humbert, MD, who is the Bloomington Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director and a Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine, noted the vital role ISMA plays in getting residents involved in advocacy early in their careers. 

"The Indiana State Medical Association plays a vital role in supporting Indiana's physician community through its Physician Assistance Program, educational seminars and resources, and advocacy on behalf of physicians and patients at the local, state, and national levels,” Dr. Humbert said. “We are sincerely grateful to Dr. McKinley for his generous gift of ISMA memberships for Bloomington's resident physicians.”

Hojjat Shamloo, MD, who is IU Bloomington IM Residency Program Director and Associate Professor of Medicine Practice at Indiana University School of Medicine and Service Line Medical Executive for Medicine Specialties at IU Health South Region, echoed Dr. Humbert’s sentiments about the importance of early access to ISMA and legal professional development. 

“ISMA also represents physicians before state and federal policymakers helping shape health care laws and policies,” Dr. Shamloo said. “We are sincerely grateful to Dr. McKinley for his generous gift of ISMA memberships for Bloomington's resident physicians.”

According to Dr. McKinley, he and his wife, Maria, hope that the residents will remain members and stay in Indiana to practice medicine. He also added that he challenged the medical community and those who employ physicians to make a contribution to the future of medicine in Indiana.
