New tool lets physicians, peers, compare controlled substance prescribing
INSPECT, Indiana’s prescription drug monitoring program, has launched a reports tool that lets physicians see how their controlled substance prescribing patterns compare with those of their peers.

The new Indiana PMP Prescriber Report is provided quarterly to all registered INSPECT users with an active account and a defined role and specialty who have written at least one opioid, sedative or stimulant prescription during the previous six months. The data includes Schedule II-V drugs reported to INSPECT by dispensers and pharmacies during the report period.

The first report distributed covered prescriptions written and dispensed from Oct. 1, 2019, to March 31, 2020. The report shows how many patients filled prescriptions written by a physician during that period and compares it with results from other physicians in that physician’s specialty. To allow even closer comparisons, morphine milligram equivalent (MME) information is broken out for opioid analgesic prescriptions.

This new reporting tool aligns with an ISMA policy established by Resolution 8-25, readopted as Resolution 18-08, which urges INSPECT to share de-identified data with providers so they can see how their prescribing compares with that of their peers.
