ISMA Past President Lawrence E. Allen, MD, died on July 12. He was 87 years old.
Dr. Allen attended Hanover College, where he majored in pre-medicine before attending and graduating from Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Allen volunteered in the Naval Reserves while at IUSM and was honorably discharged in 1962.
Upon receiving his medical degree in 1963, Dr. Allen went on to complete his internship and residency at Methodist Hospital. He then served in the Indiana Army Reserve as a first lieutenant in the medical corps before being honorably discharged in 1967.
Dr. Allen received his post-graduate residency training in urology and opened his urological practice in Anderson in 1968 as a urological surgeon. He treated and cared for over 16,000 patients until his retirement in December 2001.
Dr. Allen served as chief of staff of the surgical department at St John’s Hospital in Anderson and held numerous committee positions. For ISMA, he was Speaker of the House for several years and served as president in 1985.
Dr. Allen is at least the third ISMA past president to pass away in 2024. Jon Marhenke, MD (2008) died on April 13 and Alvin John Haley, MD (1981) passed on June 24.
