ISMA penned a letter to the U.S. Congressman Jim Baird (R-Indiana 4th Congressional District) about the loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill regarding hemp production. Congress worked to close the loophole last year, which allowed companies to sell hemp products with delta-8 THC, creating a national gray market. Despite the industry's belief that hemp-derived THC is a safe alternative to marijuana products, the FDA has never evaluated or approved delta-8 THC for safe use in any form. In fact, it is unsafe, particularly for children and adolescents.

ISMA supports legislation that prevents marketing of any form of THC to youth, which closing this loophole is necessary to achieve. ISMA also supports rescheduling cannabis from a Schedule I to a Schedule II to facilitate medical benefits research of medical marijuana and its chemical components in controlled drug studies.
