Third cohort opens for Store it Safe in Indiana
The Store it Safe Program (SIS) in Indiana, which began in the spring of 2025, has opened registration for its third cohort. The program addresses gun safety in homes on two tracks: the adolescent track and the young children track. Physicians address the matter with patients. Training on how to use evidence-based screening tools and discuss lethal means restriction with patients and families will be provided. A virtual reality platform will help participants practice and learn lethal means restriction counseling techniques.

SIS Program is a safe storage guidance and suicide prevention practice through a collaboration of the Ohio and Indiana AAP chapters. The goal is to expand SIS to new regions across Indiana to protect more children and families. Since launching in Indiana, SIS has engaged 16 practices and 109 pediatricians and other pediatric care providers. The map shows that practices are particularly needed in Southern Indiana.

According to recent data, more children and teens die from firearms than from any other cause, including car crashes and cancer. Unintentional firearm injury deaths occur at home 85 percent of the time. In addition, 82 percent of youth firearm-related suicides involve a firearm owned by a household member.

“This was most certainly the best QI project my office has ever done, and I think a majority of this is because of the clear instructions and organization,” said Kristen Frane, MD, of Fort Wayne Pediatrics.

Starting in July 2026, participating practices (space is limited) will receive:

  • 25 points of MOC IV credit
  • $1,000 clinic stipend
  • Updated resources for families and youth
  • Safety lockboxes
  • iPads for efficient and streamlined data entry
This program results from ISMA Resolutions 23-038 (Firearm Child Access Prevention and Safe Storage) and 23-039 (Firearm Counseling Protection and Harm Reduction Education).
