ISMA will host “Best Practices for Adolescent Substance Use Disorder Treatment: From Psychotherapy to Infrastructure” on Friday, July 24, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET.

The session will explore adolescent substance use prevention, recognition, screening and treatment options. Participants will also learn about local resources available to Indiana clinicians, along with an IU Health initiative focused on expanding screening efforts and improving access to brief interventions for adolescent substance use.

Additional training on the topic is available through a two-part, online, asynchronous course offered by the Indiana University School of Medicine Continuing Education program.

At the conclusion of the webinar, participants will be able to:
  • Identify four to five evidence-supported modalities that improve outcomes for adolescents with substance use disorders.
  • Describe the levels of care needed for substance use disorder treatment and why they remain in short supply.
  • Evaluate emerging treatment infrastructure designed to meet the needs of adolescents with substance use disorders.
The webinar will be presented by Leslie Hulvershorn, MD, chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Hulvershorn earned her medical degree from IU School of Medicine and completed an academic track in general psychiatry before pursuing a two-year research track fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at New York University.

A board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist, Dr. Hulvershorn is an active researcher and clinician who has authored numerous publications focused on child psychiatry. Her research has included studies examining the neurobiological basis of emotion regulation and addiction risk in children with externalizing disorders.

The webinar is accredited for 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Registration is required. The program is free for members and $75 for nonmembers.
