Indiana physicians should be aware of a recent FBI report detailing an elaborate scam where criminals impersonated an Indiana Medical Licensing Board member and a federal law enforcement agent to exploit a Hoosier health care professional for more than $56,000.
According to a Joint Situation Report, the health care professional was called in mid-March by an individual posing as an investigator with the licensing board, claiming they were under investigation for the illegal sale of narcotics and that their license had been suspended.
The scammer gave the victim a license number and personal identifying information to help legitimize the call before creating a three-way call with an accomplice, an alleged federal law enforcement agent, to discuss the professional’s case. The two actors then convinced the professional of the ruse and told them they required funds for a bond.
Even after funds were sent, the alleged federal agent required the professional to send daily text messages confirming their whereabouts and additional personal information. Through such texts, additional funds were requested for various parts of the alleged investigation.
