Monitoring the emergence of COVID-19 and guiding public health response requires accurate and timely mortality data.
Tomorrow, from 2 to 3 p.m. EDT, the CDC will host a call to give an overview of the importance of mortality data, discuss National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)
Vital Statistics Reporting Guidance on how to certify deaths suspected of being related to COVID-19, and present a summary of COVID-19 surveillance through the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS).
Mortality data from the NVSS, derived from information reported on death certificates, is a key source of information on the causes of death. Death certificates are one of the few sources of health-related data that are comparable for small geographic areas and are available over a long time period in the United States.
