Thousands of hours of hard work led to a life-changing moment for medical students on March 17, as fourth-years from the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-COM) celebrated Match Day 2023.

Both schools boasted record numbers this year, as IUSM matched 354 of 355 students (99.7%), and all 136 students at MU-COM were matched.

Of the 354 at IUSM, 107 will enter residency programs affiliated with IUSM or IU Health and 132 will at least start their residencies in Indiana. Thirty-eight percent of the IUSM students are going into primary care, 37% are heading to hospital-based care, and 22% are specializing in surgical care, according to the university. The top five specialties for the class are internal medicine, anesthesiology, pediatrics, surgery and family medicine.

The 354 matches beat last year’s 97.7% match rate at IUSM.

“This is an exciting day for our graduating medical students, and an extraordinarily successful Match Day for our school,” said Jay L. Hess, MD, Ph.D., MHSA, dean of IUSM and IU’s executive vice president for university clinical affairs. “We are incredibly proud of this diverse, talented group and all they have accomplished over the last four years. We look forward to seeing the many ways they will improve health across all of Indiana.”

At MU-COM, 45% of the matched medical students will begin residencies in Indiana. Sixty-five percent of the residents are going into primary care, while top specialties for the 2023 MU-COM class are family medicine (29%), internal medicine (22%), pediatrics (10%), anesthesiology (7%) and emergency medicine (5%). Last year, 99% of MU-COM’s DO students matched.

“Mission-aligned successes seen in Match Day 2023 provide a wonderful and exciting way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the College of Osteopathic Medicine,” said Amanda Wright, DO, dean of MU-COM, in a statement. “We are proud that 65% of students will begin primary care residencies, meeting Indiana and the Midwest’s critical need.”

A total of 338 residents from across the country were matched with IU programs, which include 29 different specialties, including internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, anesthesiology, psychiatry, surgery, OB-GYN, emergency medicine and neurology. Around 47% of the IU residencies will be in primary care.

This year, all 136 fourth-year students from Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine were matched. On March 16, the students found out where their residencies will begin.
