Some patients may need a prescription for COVID vaccine as CDC considers recommendations
Indiana physicians should be aware of potential barriers for patients seeking COVID-19 vaccinations at pharmacies.

Under current law, pharmacists may administer vaccines only through a patient-specific prescription, a physician protocol or the state health commissioner’s standing order. When a statewide standing order is in place, however, vaccines cannot be issued through a physician protocol, but must be issued through a patient-specific prescription or in accordance with the standing order.

While various states handle this issue differently, the Indiana standing order for COVID-19 vaccinations is tied to the federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have not yet acted on proposed new guidelines ACIP recommended last month, and until this happens, pharmacies may currently administer vaccines through a physician protocol or a patient-specific prescription.

At its meeting Sept. 18 and 19, ACIP recommended that patients under 65 discuss the risks and benefits of the vaccine with a physician, nurse or pharmacist before getting the shot.

The Indiana Department of Health is expected to issue clarifying guidance after the CDC issues its final guidance. ISMA will provide updates as soon as they are available.
