Make a difference by spending a day at the Statehouse
The 2023 session of the Indiana General Assembly is underway, with many important measures for physicians – including a large increase in public health funding – being considered. By setting aside just one day to spend at the Statehouse, you can increase the visibility that is critical to showing that we care about our profession and our patients. Keep reading to learn three ways you can help.

Physician of the Day
(January, March)
ISMA is responsible for staffing the Physician of the Day office at the Statehouse from Monday through Thursday in January and March. In addition to being available to treat minor ailments of legislators and their staffs, Physician of the Day volunteers will be introduced before the House and Senate and can observe the legislative process in action.

Volunteers must have an active Indiana medical license and be comfortable performing CPR. To sign up, pick an available date from the calendar, then enter your information and click “Book.” You will receive a confirmation via email.

Public Health Day
(Jan. 26)
Join Gov. Eric Holcomb, members of the Governor’s Public Health Commission and ISMA at the Statehouse on Thursday, Jan. 26, for Public Health Day. To show support for investing in Hoosiers’ health, attendees are asked to wear blue and gold to the event, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the North Atrium.

Gov. Holcomb is requesting an allocation of $347 million in the biennial budget the General Assembly will pass this year. Every physician in attendance at Public Health Day matters; a large showing will convey that we’re serious about making Hoosiers among the healthiest people in the country and Indiana one of the best places to practice medicine.

ISMA Day at the Statehouse
(March 15)
ISMA Day at the Statehouse on March 15 is an unequaled opportunity to meet with legislators in person and make the case for sound health policy firsthand: The bigger the turnout, the more impact we can have. ISMA staff will provide fact sheets and other resources and can help set up appointments with your legislators. Legislators need to hear from physicians personally about scope of practice, transparency in advertising, increasing public health funding, and other issues to understand what is at stake.
