This live webinar is free for members and nonmembers as part of the 2023 Opioid CME Series, thanks to the support of a State Opioid Response Grant from the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration Division of Mental Health and Addiction.

The relationship between pain and opioid use disorder is complex. For many people with opioid use disorder, their introduction to opioids began with a prescription to treat pain, and many patients with opioid use disorder also have chronic pain. Addressing pain in people with an opioid use disorder presents unique challenges. In this webinar, Michael Bushey, MD, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychiatry at IU School of Medicine and medical director of the Addiction Treatment and Recovery Center of IU Health Methodist Hospital, will discuss ways to manage chronic and acute pain in people dependent on opioids because of opioid use disorder or as a result of chronic opioid therapy.

The rate of recidivism for incarcerated individuals in the United States is 70% within five years of release, with few resources to assist reentering individuals in finding housing, gaining employment or accessing social services. ISMA has resolved to focus attention on efforts that remove barriers and increase access to social services and benefits for reentering individuals, such as food subsidies, health care and housing. ISMA is also committed to educating physicians about ways to connect reentering individuals with needed resources in their communities.
