PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Participate in a transformative retreat tailored specifically for women physicians.This comprehensive program brings together powerful concepts to help physicians and medical students thrive in both their personal lives and professional careers. It addresses the intersection of emotional intelligence, identity formation, and change management, offering participants tools and insights to navigate challenges and transitions with confidence.
ISMA is holding this year’s in-person Women in Medicine Retreat at the critically acclaimed Hotel Carmichael in downtown Carmel. Hotel Carmichael, an Autograph Collection Hotel, is an architectural masterpiece inspired in part by the work of 18th-century architect Robert Adam. The venue delivers a distinguished hospitality experience, offering dining, refined meeting spaces, and thoughtful details like daily live music.
An unforgettable lunch experience at Feinstein's, nestled in the elegant Hotel Carmichael has been planned with a special musical performance by Crooked Finger Rhythm Review. The band members include fellow physicians Dr. Nicholas Zyromski, Professor of Surgery and David Aronoff, MD, the chair of the Department of Medicine at IU School of Medicine.
MORNING SESSION SPEAKER:
Erica Howe, MD, FSHM
Hospitalist and Founder of the Women Physicians Wellness Conference
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Howe is a board-certified hospitalist, educator, wife, and mother to three crazy kids. As a prolific speaker and lifelong advocate for improved wellness in medicine, she has given hundreds of talks both nationally and internationally on topics like conflict management and boundary setting. In 2018, Dr. Howe founded the Women Physicians Wellness Conference, a three-day event hosted in Aruba, Grand Cayman, and Amelia Island exclusively for women physicians to bring them together to share their struggles and strategies for success. She believes that women are stronger together and wants to inspire them to find the courage, clarity, and community to succeed on their own terms instead of someone else’s.
Negotiation 101: Moving out of Your Emotional Basement
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Examine the five negotiating styles and the specific situations in which each shines.
- Apply strategies to help keep others out of their “emotional basement” in a conflict as a means of facilitating a more productive dialogue.
- Acquire specific phrases that can help move both parties in a conflict towards a solution.

Laurel Fick, MD
Internal Medicine, Niche Medical and Consulting
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
After 19 years in practice as a board-certified internal medicine physician and medical educator in traditional U.S. health care systems, Dr. Fick ventured into the insurance-free micropractice model to provide high-quality, affordable, and patient-centered primary care to her patients. Dr. Fick’s approach to medicine is centered around prevention, longevity, and a sturdy belief that the body is capable of self-care and healing through lifestyle optimization and sometimes a little Western medicine magic at Niche Medical and Consulting in Carmel. In pursuit of knowledge to take whole-body anticipatory care of her patients, Dr. Fick recently achieved certification from the Menopause Society and the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine.

Choosing Your Own Adventure
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Examine the modern physician life cycle.
- Uncover the autonomy and agency that exists in health care.
- Identify options for pivots and re-framing a physician career that serves you.
Emily Zarse, MD
Psychiatrist, Community Health Network
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Zarse received her medical degree from IU School of Medicine in 2017 and has earned board certification in addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry and psychiatry. She currently serves as the director for Community Health Network’s Addiction Medicine Fellowship program. She enjoys teaching, expanding access to care for the underserved, and designing innovative ways to meet the needs of the community.
Suzanne Courtney, Psy.D, HSPP
Psychologist, Private Practice
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Courtney earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 1999. As a published author, Dr. Courtney has remained active in both clinical work and education. After leaving her position as the Director of Behavioral Science in a Family Medicine Residency Program, she re-entered private practice and joined the Hillebrand Center for Compassionate Care Science in Medicine as an adjunct professor. Dr. Courtney embraces the opportunity to advance the role of Compassion Science in understanding the factors creating health, in and for practitioners and patients.
AFTERNOON SESSION 2:
Identity Development in Women & Professional Identity Formation in Medicine
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Understand the basic and distinct formative steps in identity development for women.
- Understand how these formative steps influence/impact their identity as physicians in roles of authority and power.
- Identify role constructs and their influence in practice.
AFTERNOON SESSION 3:
The Role of Vulnerability in Creating Safe Clinical Practice
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Define implicit vs. explicit vulnerability in clinical practice.
- Identify the “hidden curricula” in medical education related to the management of vulnerability.
- Examine healthy workplace integration of vulnerability and its role in the construction of safe clinical practice.
