Program description:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been developing for generations and has taken many forms. Only recently has an interactive form of AI, “generative AI,” been made readily available to the public for general consumption. While the future of AI may be uncertain, its permanent place on the technology scene is assured. How can we use generative AI as a tool in clinical practice to help patients? How will patients be using this technology to communicate with us? What will this ultimately look like, and how can we be a part of the discussion involving its creation and integration into practice? This webinar will address these questions and more while introducing AI and its current and future place in clinical care.

Objectives:

At the end of this live webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the current state of AI in health care.
  • Recognize the potential of AI use in near future for health care.
  • Investigate the pitfalls, challenges, and ethical considerations of using artificial intelligence in clinical care.

Speaker:

Kyle Hultgren, PharmD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Purdue University College of Pharmacy

About the speaker:

Kyle Hultgren is a clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Purdue University’s College of Pharmacy and the founding director of Purdue’s Center for Medication Safety Advancement. Hultgren’s current research includes extensive work on dashboards and measurement systems for the evaluation and improvement of medication use systems as well as the integration of publicly available social media data as potential surveillance signals. As a result of this work, he guided the creation of SafeRx, a large, curated, relational database containing millions of adverse drug events gathered using AI tools.

In addition to his research, Hultgren has worked extensively to bring new safety concepts to medical professionals and holds three patents on medical devices designed to improve patient safety.  He lectures nationally and internationally on safe medication use practices and is the recipient of the 2015 Purdue University College of Pharmacy’s Dr. Aziz Teaching Award.

Speaker:

Alan Zillich, PharmD, FCCP
William S. Bucke Professor and Head, Purdue University

About the speaker:

Alan Zillich graduated with a BS and Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from Purdue University before completing four years of post-graduate training. First, at the University of Kentucky, he completed a general practice (PGY1) residency and a specialty residency (PGY2) in ambulatory care. Then, he completed a health outcomes research fellowship at the University of Iowa Colleges of Pharmacy and Medicine. Currently, Zillich holds an academic appointment as the William S. Bucke Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the Purdue University College of Pharmacy and a research scientist appointment at the Veterans Affairs Health Services Research and Development Center for Health Information and Communication.

Zillich’s research interests involve (1) the roles of professional collaborative relationships between pharmacists and other health care providers; (2) the effectiveness of pharmacy-based services on improved medication prescribing, patient safety, and patient health outcomes; and (3) methods to improve prescribing and utilization of medications through health informatics and data science approaches.
