The Indiana State Medical Association (ISMA) and Indiana county medical societies are pleased to offer this webinar featuring U.S. Surgeon General Jerome M. Adams, MD, MPH. Dr. Adams will present an overview of social determinants of health and their impact on health outcomes. He will draw on expertise from his medical and public health training to highlight the crucial role collaboration among health care agencies plays in addressing health disparities effectively.

About the speaker:

Jerome M. Adams, MD, MPH, is the 20th surgeon general of the United States. His mission as the “Nation’s Doctor” is to advance the health of the American people, and his motto is “better health through better partnerships.” He is committed to forging new partnerships and strengthening existing relationships with members of the business, faith, education, public safety and national security communities.

Dr. Adams is focused on building a culture of health and prevention in all sectors. As part of those efforts, he is compiling a report documenting the connection between private sector investments and public policies. These connections promote healthy communities and subsequent measures of business and community prosperity. The report will share evidence, inspire future research and provide tools and resources for effective, efficient community health investments.

As surgeon general, Dr. Adams holds the rank of vice admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. In this capacity, he oversees the operations of more than 6,000 uniformed health officers who serve in nearly 800 locations around the world, promoting, protecting and advancing the health and safety of our nation.

Dr. Adams is a former Indiana health commissioner and ISMA Young Physician Society trustee who earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He also holds a Master of Public Health degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

Objectives:

At the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

• Describe the impact of COVID-19 on social determinants of health and health equity.
  
• Describe the impact of health disparities from an individual and community health perspective.
  
• Explain the shift from fee-for-service to fee-for-value payment models in health care and the impact of this shift on social determinants of health.
  
• Describe a "call to action" for local health systems to create meaningful change in addressing health disparities: Addressing hypertension and maternal/child health as social determinants of health.
