Series description:

ISMA Women in Medicine (WIM) Discussion Forum sessions take place on Tuesdays each month and are scheduled from 7 to 8 p.m. ET via Zoom. All female members of ISMA are welcome to join to connect, network and discuss topics of special significance to female physicians today. Sessions begin with an opening presentation, followed by a facilitated group discussion.

Session description:

In the medical profession, women physicians are often automatically assigned a position of inferior status compared to their male colleagues. Women physicians also face challenges to their status from female nurses on the job. “Status-leveling burden”is considered a set of behaviors all female physicians must perfect to level up their status regarding these two groups in practice.

In this session, Jane Bridges, MD, will discuss these challenges and mitigation strategies that can assist women physicians.

Session objectives:

At the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  1. Characterize the theory and definition of status-leveling.
  2. Define the three status levels women physicians must navigate and negotiate in their careers.
  3. Discuss compensatory status-leveling behaviors.
  4. Debate the benefits and burdens of status-leveling behaviors.
  5. Lear mitigation strategies to assist women physicians.
