Program description:

Participants will explore evidence-based strategies for implementing opioid-free perioperative care, including multimodal pain management approaches that enhance patient outcomes while reducing reliance on opioids. The session will also examine the effects of cannabinoids in the perioperative setting, highlighting clinical considerations, potential benefits, and risks.

Additionally, attendees will gain practical guidance on managing opioid-tolerant patients and those with substance use disorders, with a focus on safe, effective, and patient-centered care strategies across the surgical continuum.

 

 

Objectives:

At the end of this live webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Assess the status of the opioid epidemic.
  • Describe methods of opioid free peri-operative care.
  • Relate to the impact of cannabinoids on peri-operative care.
  • Develop options for opioid-tolerant patients or patients undergoing substance use disorder.

About the speaker:

Don Selzer, MD currently serves as the Willis D. Gatch Professor of Surgery, Program Director of the Fellowship for Advanced Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery, Chief of the Division of General Surgery and Associate Chair of the Department of Surgery.

Dr. Selzer’s clinical focus includes general surgery and includes bariatric or weight loss surgery, surgical management of gastroesophageal reflux and other foregut diseases and common and complex abdominal hernia repair.
