Program description:

Financial security requires planning, and creating your financial plan begins with clarifying your ideal future. In this session, you will consider what financial independence looks like for you. You’ll learn how to map out the steps required for financial security and consider the steps you need to take to achieve it.

Simply having a financial plan doesn’t ensure success. Executing the plan is required, beginning with managing cash flow. The early years of medical training and practice are an ideal time to begin managing your cash flow, since the home you purchase and the car you drive can potentially undermine your long-term financial plan in no time.

You’ll also learn how to calculate your ideal savings for the short term and the long term. Short-term considerations include building cash reserves and making major purchases. Long-term considerations include investing for retirement and funding college. Cash serves many purposes for the young physician; when managed well, it provides security and flexibility to make solid financial decisions.

Good planning also involves anticipating potential risks and planning for them. The biggest financial risk young physicians face is losing their ability to earn income. Good planning involves considering the impact of various risks and having a plan for each.

Finally, we will look at estate planning. A comprehensive legal plan to protect your earnings, your business, your assets and your career will help you sleep better at night in the long run. When done right, estate planning for physicians works in tandem with a financial plan to pay down student loan debt over time.

Objectives:

At the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • List specific action items that set the foundation for a successful career, both financially and personally.
  • Identify the core elements of an estate plan and how to apply them to their specific situation.
  • Create their own customized financial plan based on specific goals.
  • Describe the relationship between saving, risk and the time horizon for retirement.
