Program description:

When a mother or expectant mother dies, the ripple effects on families and communities are enormous. Fortunately, there are simple steps that all physicians can take to protect their pregnant patients and those who may become pregnant. In this webinar, Mary Pell Abernathy, MD, MBA, chair of the Indiana Maternal Mortality Review Committee, will discuss the committee’s work to gather data about and increase awareness of perinatal deaths, the disparities and other factors contributing to those deaths, and what physicians can do to safeguard patients of childbearing age.

Objectives:

At the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Outline the findings of Indiana’s MMRC review.
  • Understand persistent population-level disparities that exist.
  • Enact many of the recommendations made to reduce maternal mortality throughout our state.

Speaker:

Mary Pell Abernathy, MD, MBA
Maternal-Fetal Medicine Physician
Chair, Indiana Maternal Mortality Review Committee

About our speaker:

Dr. Abernathy, a maternal and fetal medicine physician, currently works with the Richard Lugar Center for Rural Health, a division of Union Health, to create a network of maternal and child health providers to serve women in the Wabash Valley. Her interests include maternal substance use disorder, preterm birth prevention and using innovative programs to decrease maternal and infant mortality.

Dr. Abernathy has collaborated with policymakers and legislators to reduce preventable maternal and infant mortality and increase access to contraception to decrease unplanned pregnancies. She also co-leads the Indiana Perinatal Quality Collaborative (IPQIC) women’s health task force to improve the health of Hoosier women throughout their lives.
