Program description:

A wealth of evidence about medications to treat opioid use disorder (OUD) has been amassed over the past half century from clinical studies, randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses. In spite of the extensive evidence supporting the use of medications to treat OUD, there remain major gaps in knowledge about which medication works best and for whom, as well as how the medications compare over the long term. This webinar is designed to give physicians and nonphysician practitioners a better understanding of functional outcomes of medication-based treatment for OUD.

Objectives:

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Characterize the history of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
  • Summarize the epidemiology of opioid-related overdose deaths.
  • Comprehend the paradigm shift in substance use disorder treatment, including harm reduction.
  • Outline substance use disorder (SUD) myths.
  • Categorize all three FDA approved medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), including their limitations and prescribing guidelines.
  • Identify the five DSM criteria for the diagnosis of SUD and OUD.
  • Appreciate the importance of universal screening for SUD in primary care.
  • Interpret X-waiver training criteria and "intent to prescribe."
