Program description:

Navigating the clinical care of patients with chronic pain is multifaceted and requires balancing patients' needs with safety and legal/ethical considerations. A critical component in medical decision-making is the psychological evaluation of patients.

Chronic pain is most simply assessed using a one-dimensional scale, such as the visual analog scale (VAS), numeric rating scale (NRS) or verbal descriptor scale (VDS). These scales are self-rated and give a snapshot of the intensity of a patient's pain. However, chronic pain is highly complex. Multiple factors affect what a patient experiences with his or her pain, and one-dimensional measures may over-simplify the assessment.

Objectives:

At the end of this webinarattendees will be able to:

  • Identify factors increasing the complexity of managing patients with chronic pain.
  • Comprehend components of psychological assessment that help providers manage risk, and understand how these are relevant to treatment of advanced pain.
  • Outline areas for future study related to interdisciplinary management of chronic pain.
