Patients Over Prior Auth: Keep sending examples to help reform prior auth

Prior authorization continues to delay patient care and treatment, impact outcomes, and drive up health care costs for all Hoosiers. Physician offices advocate for their patients but are forced to waste valuable time and resources on these burdens.

Your stories about how prior authorization impacts patients are a powerful way to help ISMA put Patients Over Prior Auth.

Please participate in ISMA’s newest advocacy initiative by sending us the latest example(s) of payors inappropriately putting prior auth over patients. Almost 90 stories have already been submitted to ISMA since the short intake form went live.

There is no limit on the number of submissions you can make. In fact, the more examples we have, the more impactful it will be -- even if they are repetitive.

In addition to the dozens of submissions we’ve received from physicians, medical staff have also sent prior auth stories to ISMA.

One anonymous physician staff member submitted, “Reflux medications for infants. All insurances want to cover different medications. I feel we spend a lot of time on PAs for reflux medication because it is difficult to get insurances to agree with each other (Medicaid and commercial argue the most), or they only cover a tiny amount of the cost and want parents (who lack sleep already) to pay hundreds out of pocket so that they can help their poor child feel better.  Also, the cost of medications after ‘insurance covers it.’ Ridiculous. How are people supposed to live with the cost of living and now the cost of medications to help them live?”

Another staff worker wrote, “I have 40 to 50 patients that are prescribed Prolia injections that are every six months and need to be approved for buy and bill, as well as for the cost of using the infusion center.”

Visit www.ismanet.org/PatientsOverPriorAuth to share your story and read several others.

Please consider sharing this article with your colleagues, even if they’re not ISMA members. We want to hear from as many Hoosier physicians as possible.

Thank you for continuing to advocate for the well-being of all Hoosiers. Your participation in this Patients Over Prior Auth initiative will help bring about vital change.
